Since 1980, September 27th has been designated as World Tourism Day by the World Tourism Organisation (WTO).
The purpose of the day is to promote awareness on how tourism is vital to the international community and to display its impact on the social, cultural, political and economic values worldwide. September 27th has been an important date since 1970, when the Statutes of the WTO were adopted, an event which is considered to be a major milestone in global tourism.
Each year has a specific theme and is hosted by a different country. This year's event is being hosted by Peru and will be themed "Tourism Responding to the Challenge of Climate Change".
