The sustainability of destinations is becoming increasingly important for visitors so our DMOs may be interested to find out more about the Sustainable Destinations Top 100 initiative and how they can learn from front runners in the Green Destinations Community.

The fourth Sustainable Destinations Global Top 100 highlights success stories and acts as an exchange for good practice in order to encourage all destinations to be more sustainable for local communities and travellers.  The theme for the 2018 competition is 'Tourism to Benefit Local Communities'.

Organisers are looking for destinations that do not suffer from over-tourism and have measures in place to prevent it when necessary. Selection of a destination in the Top 100 does not necessarily mean that the destination is fully sustainable but that it has made a concerted effort and is making progress.  Selection is via an open nomination and assessment process.

The competition is open to cities, towns, islands, and protected areas and, in exceptional cases, countries and regions may be eligible if their size is less than 50,000 sq km.

For more information or to nominate your destination, check out the official Green Destinations website.
